In today’s technology-driven world, digital citizenship has become an essential skill for students, educators, and everyday users of the internet. Digital citizenship refers to the responsible, ethical, and safe use of technology, particularly in online spaces such as social media, websites, and digital communication platforms. As access to technology continues to expand, so does the responsibility to use it wisely.
The International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) is a great resource for educators who are teaching their students how to become a Digital Citizen. According to the ISTE+ASCD website (2026), Digital citizens have mindsets that are balanced, informed, inclusive, engaged, and alert. Digital citizens spend a healthy amount of time online, and are able to evaluate the validity of digital media to curate digital resources (ISTE+ASCD, 2026). Digital citizens have inclusive mind sets and are able to listen to multiple viewpoints about certain topics without being condescending to others (ISTE+ASCD, 2026). Digital Citizens are also engaged and alert, using digital media to solve problems for the good of others, but completing this task safely and securely (ISTE+ASCD, 2026).
As Educational Leaders, we must implement Digital Citizenship to help empower students to use technology in meaningful ways. ISTE created the ISTE Standards for Education Leaders to give educators an outline on how to build our instruction on Digital Citizenship. In the ISTE Standard 3: For Educational Leaders (2026), the standard is broken into five (5) sections for educational leaders to complete – Digital Citizenship Advocate, Visionary Planner, Empowering Leader, System Designer, and Connected Learner. In each of these sections, educational leaders are expected to engage in the ethical use of technology, establish vision for strategic planning and evaluation, create empowered leaders and innovative thinkers, and build teams to implement, improve, and promote professional learning for themselves and others (ISTE, 2026).
Common Sense Media (2026) is a great resource for educators to help create Digital Citizens in their classrooms. The company created K-12 curriculum helps educators to teach Digital Literacy and Citizenship to students in fun, interactive ways. The curriculum consists of content that is age-appropriate depending on grade level, with lessons including videos, slides, customizable resources and resources for English Language Learners (Common Sense Media, 2026). The Digital Citizenship Curriculum is backed by evidence-based research (James, Weinstein, & Mendoza, 2021) and offers Professional Development for educators to help implementation in the classroom go smoothly.
Digital citizenship is about empowering individuals to use technology in a positive and meaningful way. By fostering responsibility, respect, and awareness, we can create a safer and more productive digital environment for everyone. As technology continues to evolve, so must our commitment to being thoughtful and ethical digital citizens.
